Adam Hall is an amateur lawyer who is just 26 year old. After finishing law school he joins the firm Kravitz and Bane. In his first year itself he volunteers for a job that even an experienced lawyer would think twice before taking. He decides to defend Sam Cayhall who is guilty of killing to nine years old Jews in a horrible bombing in 1967.
Sam Cayhall is the most unpleasant client one could ask for. He does not want Adam or his Jewish law firm. He is foul mouthed and an outspoken racist who was involved with the Ku Klux Klan. It is up to Adam to save this man from being gassed.
But why does Sam takes up such a case is it some thing to do with the past?
Why Sam refuses top own up about his accomplice?
Are Sam and Adam relented?
The answer to these question lie in the book.
The author takes us through the internal strife of both Adam and Sam. The book takes us for a ride in the American South before the civil rights. A time when the Black Americans were treated badly and were lynched mercilessly. The story shows you both the sides of the story and in the end the reader is left to think about the morality of death sentence.
The story is extremely plot driven and gripping. Once you start reading the book you do not feel like putting it down. The novel is big and bulky but every page is a treat to read.
