With the second wave raging across India the fear for Covid has escalated and it is even worse than earlier. In addition to the fear of contracting COVID-19 are the significant changes to our daily lives as our movements are restricted in support of efforts to contain and slow down the spread of the virus. Faced with new realities of working from home, temporary unemployment, home-schooling of children, and lack of physical contact with other family members, friends and colleagues, it is important that we look after our mental health.

The most important ways we can take care of our mental health is by answering the simple questions:

What can I do to improve my mood?

  • Drawing a timetable
  • Engage in entertaining activities
  • Taking time to connect with your near and dear ones
  • Consider finding a balance on news updates try cutting down on the news on COVID related deaths and new cases reported. If you follow the protocols prescribed by the government and health agencies you will be safe
  • Performing physical activity, as physical activities help release dopamine which uplifts the mood.
  • Meditating and doing Yoga especially Pranayama to keep yourself calm and increase on lung capacity.

How can I stay healthy?

  • Keep following daily routines or create one
  • Do not change your eating and sleeping schedule
  • Stay hydrated and eat healthy food
  • Be physically active (aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise each day)
  • Be mentally active. Try solving puzzles, crosswords or try mental fitness exercises, playing musical instruments, chess or dominoes, etc.

What can I do to feel connected with my family and community?

  • Help others if you can
  • Talk to family and friends as it is physical distancing not social distancing
  • Maintain societal, religious or spiritual involvement.

Thus, keep your health, your mood and your surroundings in the right state and your mind will remain healthy.

In the end I also wish to tell you that the pandemic is affecting the mental health of the older people and therefore do have a look at this tool kit to determine your and your elders mental health:
